Description
This statue of Amitayus Buddha (the Buddha of Immeasurable Life, an aspect of Amitabha Buddha) is cast from refined antique copper, adorned with traditional mud-gild finish—a technique where gold powder is mixed with animal glue and applied in layers to the copper body. Centuries of oxidation have lent the gilding a mottled, warm luster, like the glow of sunset preserved in time, revealing the rich patina of aged copper. Crafted with high-relief chased detailing, the flowing robes feature intricate patterns of lotus flowers and scrolling vines that rise and fall with vivid dimensionality, catching light and shadow to embody the symbolic radiance of “immeasurable light.”
As the presiding Buddha of the Western Pure Land of Sukhavati, Amitayus made Forty-Eight Vows to protect all beings, particularly revered for his vows to eliminate karmic obstacles, extend lifespan, and nurture virtuous thoughts in both Han and Tibetan Buddhist traditions. The Buddha’s face is plump and serene, eyes half-closed in quiet contemplation, hands forming the dhyana mudra while cradling a sacred bowl, seated in the full lotus position (padmasana) on a double-tiered lotus throne. The plump, orderly petals of the throne unfold like a blooming lotus, symbolizing the purity and solemnity of the Western Pure Land. The chased robes follow Tibetan iconographic conventions yet carry the soft grace of Han Chinese linework, blending the rugged strength of Tibetan craftsmanship with the understated elegance of Eastern Zen philosophy.
Our creation honors the authenticity of antique copper and mud-gild craftsmanship, rejecting ostentatious gilding to preserve the essence of the material. Every chased line reflects the artisan’s devotion to Buddhist principles; every speckled patch of gilding bears the marks of time and faith. More than a work of art, it is a living testament to the transmission of vows across centuries: the compassion of Amitayus Buddha, the meticulous craftsmanship of the artisans, and our reverence for the Eastern aesthetic that finds beauty in subtlety and gold in the passage of time.
Sincere veneration of this sacred icon brings the radiant blessings of Amitayus Buddha. May you find peace of mind, longevity, and enduring well-being, abiding in the serenity of the Western Pure Land, free from all afflictions.
