Description
This Tibetan-style cast bronze statue of Bhaisajyaguru Vaiḍūrya Prabha Tathāgata (the Medicine Buddha) is crafted from refined copper, with meticulous chased patterns of lotus flowers and scrolling vines adorning the robes—each line unfurling like a vein of Eastern aesthetic wisdom. The Buddha’s face radiates gentle compassion, eyes half-closed in serene contemplation, while his right hand delicately holds a branch of haritaki (Terminalia chebula). This sacred herb, a cornerstone of Tibetan herbal pharmacology, embodies the Medicine Buddha’s promise to heal both physical ailments and spiritual ignorance. In his left hand, he cradles a lapis lazuli medicine bowl, a vessel of radiant light that reflects the purity of the Eastern Pure Lapis Lazuli World, holding the devotees’ prayers for physical and spiritual well-being.
As the presiding Buddha of the Eastern Pure Lapis Lazuli World, Bhaisajyaguru made Twelve Great Vows to protect all beings, among which the vow to alleviate suffering and uphold the wisdom of herbal medicine holds profound significance in Tibetan Buddhism. For centuries, Tibetan medicine and Buddhism have grown as one, with the Medicine Buddha revered not only as a spiritual guide but also as the patron saint of herbal pharmacology. Tibetan physicians invoke his blessings before gathering herbs like haritaki, agarwood, and rhodiola, seeing him as the source of all healing wisdom. Seated in the full lotus position (padmasana) on a double-tiered lotus throne, the Buddha’s form mirrors the unfolding petals of the lotus, symbolizing his boundless compassion that covers the world, nurturing every prayer for health and wholeness.
Our creation honors the understated elegance of Eastern aesthetics, choosing not to overemphasize gilded opulence but to preserve the warm, aged patina of the copper body, letting the passage of time become part of the statue’s story. The chased robes follow Tibetan iconographic traditions, yet carry the soft grace of Han Chinese linework—just as Tibetan and Han healing traditions have intertwined, this statue blends the rugged strength of Tibetan craftsmanship with the serene clarity of Eastern Zen philosophy. More than an object of art, it is a living testament to centuries of healing heritage: the Medicine Buddha’s vows, the wisdom of Tibetan herbalism, and our reverence for the healing beauty of the East.
May this Bhaisajyaguru Buddha guide you with the scent of haritaki, protect you with the light of the lapis bowl, and bring you the peace and well-being of the Eastern Pure Lapis Lazuli World.
