Description
This statue of Vairocana Buddha (the Great Sun Buddha) is crafted from fine copper and adorned with traditional gilding technique. After centuries of weathering, the gilt layer is mottled yet lustrous, revealing the rich texture of aged copper patina. Strictly following the iconographic rules of Ming Dynasty Han Chinese Buddhism, the Buddha wears an ornate crown of Han Chinese style with intricate patterns, a plump and serene face with half-closed eyes, embodying the tranquil and compassionate demeanor of the Dharmakaya Buddha, who pervades all things with universal light. Clad in a traditional Han-style kasaya with a double-collar and drooping sleeves, the robe patterns are smoothly carved with distinct folds, fitting the body naturally while exuding rhythmic grace, showcasing the craftsmen’s precise mastery of human anatomy and sartorial aesthetics in the Ming era. Seated in full lotus position on a double-tiered lotus throne with plump, orderly petals adorned with Ruyi cloud motifs at the tips—an iconic feature of Ming Han Chinese Buddhist statues—symbolizing the pure, undefiled Huayan Dharmadhatu.
As a fine example of Ming Han Chinese Buddhist statuary, this icon traces its spiritual origin to the Tang Dynasty Esoteric Buddhism (Tangmi), serving as an important testament to the localization of Vairocana Buddha worship in Han China. It preserves the core reverence for the Dharmakaya Buddha from Tangmi while integrating the dignified and restrained aesthetic of Han Chinese Buddhism, distinguishing it from the iconographic characteristics of Tibetan Esoteric Buddhism. The mottled gilt layer harmonizes with the aged copper base, every detail carrying the charm of time and the artisan’s devotion. Sincere veneration of this sacred icon brings the radiant blessings of Vairocana Buddha, protecting devotees with physical and mental well-being, perfect fortune and wisdom, in harmony with the boundless compassion and wisdom of the Huayan world. Adhering to our philosophy of reviving ancient Eastern aesthetics, we carry forward the timeless spirit of Buddhism, bringing inner peace and tranquility to all who connect with it.
If you welcome and enshrine this Buddha Statue upon your spiritual connection, please venerate it strictly in accordance with Buddhist rituals.
