Gilt Copper Painted Green Tara Statue · The Compassionate Protector of All Sufferings
This statue of Green Tara is crafted from refined copper, fully gilded and adorned with natural mineral polychrome, its colors warm and vivid, like a lotus blooming for the first time on the Tibetan plateau, brimming with innate spiritual grace. Following Tibetan Buddhist iconographic traditions, the Tara wears a five-leaf crown, her face serene and gentle, eyes half-closed as if gazing compassionately upon all suffering in the world. Her right hand forms the abhaya mudra, dispelling fear for all beings; her left hand holds an utpala (blue lotus) flower, symbolizing the purity and compassion of the lotus-born savioress. Seated in the ardhaparyanka (half-lotus) position on a double-tiered lotus throne, with her left leg folded and her right foot resting lightly on a small lotus, she embodies her vow to instantly rise from her seat to deliver all beings from suffering—an expression of her promise to answer every call for help and manifest in every realm.
Green Tara is one of the most revered female deities in Tibetan Buddhism, an emanation of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. She is venerated for her vows to deliver beings from suffering, eliminate disasters, and protect all who seek her refuge. For centuries, countless devotees have turned to her, praying for relief from illness, freedom from fear, and enduring peace. Legend holds that Tara was born from a lotus, symbolizing purity untainted by the world; her green form represents vitality and boundless energy, bringing hope and renewal to those in despair. In Tibetan folk belief, she is not only the compassionate protector of all beings but also a special guardian for women, blessing them with physical and mental well-being, family harmony, and the growth of merit and wisdom.
The craftsmanship of this statue reveals meticulous artistry and Eastern aesthetic wisdom. The gilding is thick and lustrous, while the mineral polychrome remains vivid even after years, with chased lines flowing smoothly across the robes, intricate patterns of lotus flowers and scrolling vines unfurling like natural veins, blending the rugged strength of Tibetan craftsmanship with the soft grace of Han Chinese linework. The lotus throne is painted in green and red, echoing Tara’s green form, honoring Tibetan color traditions while embodying the Eastern philosophy of the lotus rising untainted from the mud. In recreating this statue, we rejected ostentatious opulence, instead using traditional gilding and mineral polychrome techniques to preserve the authentic beauty of Green Tara imagery, every gleam of gold and every stroke of color a tribute to compassion and protection.
More than a finely crafted work of art, this statue is a living testament to the transmission of vows across centuries: the compassion of Green Tara, the devotion of the artisans, and our commitment to the Eastern aesthetic of “carrying the path through form, transmitting the heart through art.” Sincere veneration of this sacred icon brings the compassionate protection of Green Tara, clearing away the dust and fear of the world, bringing a life as pure and free as the lotus, and blessing you with physical and mental well-being, peace, and prosperity.
