According to legend, Shakyamuni Buddha manifested as the Kalachakra deity at the Vajra Seat in Bodh Gaya, southern India, in response to the request of King Suchandra of Shambhala, to teach the Kalachakra Tantra. At that time, King Suchandra traveled to Bodh Gaya to seek the Dharma for the liberation of his people in Shambhala. The Buddha appeared in the wrathful Yab-Yum form of Kalachakra to impart the Kalachakra teachings, using the flow of cosmic time to symbolize the cycle of samsara for all beings, and the union of compassion and wisdom in the Yab-Yum form to symbolize the path to enlightenment. King Suchandra later brought these teachings back to Shambhala, where they were passed down through generations. The tradition then spread to Tibet, becoming one of the core teachings of the Anuttarayoga Tantra in Tibetan Buddhism, and Kalachakra thus became one of the Five Principal Deities, venerated by the Gelug, Kagyu, and Sakya sects.
