In Karma Kagyu, the principal Mahākāla (Mahakala) is Two-Armed Black-Cloaked Mahākāla (Bernagchen), the exclusive, personal protector of all Karmapas (Dharma Kings). He is revered as the root protector and activity deity of the Karma Kagyu lineage, with a vow: “I shall protect the Karmapa’s Dharma activities and safeguard the Karma Kagyu transmission forever.”

The Bernagchen lineage was formally established by the 2nd Karmapa, Karma Pakshi (1204–1283). His father was a Nyingma tantric priest, and the tradition originated from Nyingma Terma (revealed treasure). Karma Pakshi integrated it into Karma Kagyu, making it the core protector of the Karmapa family and lineage.

Iconography of Karma Kagyu Mahākāla (Bernagchen):

  • One face, two arms, three eyes, dark blue-black complexion, squat and powerful (humility + strength);
  • Clad in a great black cloak (Ber nag)—the origin of his name “Bernagchen”;
  • Right hand holds kartari (cleaver) (cutting ego); left hand holds kapala (skull cup) (transforming defilements);
  • Stands on a flame halo, trampling a human corpse (subduing the four māras).

Within Karma Kagyu: “The guru is the Karmapa; the protector is Mahākāla. The Black Crown (symbol of the Karmapa) and the Black-Cloaked Protector are inseparable, one in essence.” All Karmapas have practiced this deity: the 10th Karmapa beheld him at enthronement; the 16th Karmapa manifested him at his heart center during practice, merging as one.

Karma Kagyu regards Bernagchen as the activity protector (karma protector), specializing in swift obstacle removal, accomplishment of activities, protection of practice and lineage.

Comparison with Sakya’s Staff-Bearing Mahākāla:

  • Sakya: Focus on Hevajra mandala protection, monastery and lineage guardianship;
  • Karma Kagyu: Focus on the Karmapa’s personal and Dharma activities, practitioners’ worldly and spiritual success.
