When the world sees Hevajra’s wrathful form, they may feel fear; when they see the yab-yum form, they may have impure thoughts. Little do they know, the wrathful form is the vajra pestle that destroys ignorance; the yab-yum form is the symbol of non-dual bliss and emptiness. The Hevajra Tantra says: “With great compassion as the father, and wisdom of emptiness as the mother, the bodhicitta child is born.” This statue’s sixteen arms, like a thousand hands and eyes, illuminate the ignorance of the world; the flame mandorla, like the fire of wisdom, burns away the firewood of afflictions. The “joy” here is not the pleasure of desire, but the great freedom of destroying ego-clinging and realizing emptiness, as Zen says, “Afflictions are bodhi.” Compassion is seen in wrath, and true nature is seen in union.
