Reviewing a thousand years of Sino-Tibetan Esoteric art history, Six-Armed Mahakala stands as the most iconic sculptural specimen embodying cultural communication between Indian and Chinese Buddhism. Rooted in Sanskrit tantra text Mahakala Root Tantra, his archetype derives from the wrathful emanation of Hindu deity Shiva, assimilated into Tang Esoteric Buddhism in the 7th century. Monk Yi Xing explicitly recorded in Mahavairocana Sutra Commentary that Mahakala manifested from Mahavairocana to subdue all three realms. After folk transformation through Song and Yuan dynasties, the six-armed wrathful iconography gained imperial national guardian status when Sakya Buddhism spread across central plains in Yuan era, fully standardized by Imperial Workshop during Qianlong reign of Qing Dynasty, completing a full transmission route: India → Central Asia → Chang’an → Tibet → inland China.

This bronze sculpture strictly complies with iconographic standards authenticated by Palace Museum and Poly Auction for Six-Armed Mahakala: single head with three wrathful eyes, flaming vermilion hair crowned with five skulls, six hands holding kartika sword, kapala cup, trident, lasso, damaru drum and mala rosary corresponding to the Six Perfections. Pierced flaming aureole symbolizes incineration of ignorance, trampling Vinayaka under feet represents subduing ego and demonic arrogance, while inlaid ornamentation inherits traditional Himalayan royal statue turquoise-coral setting craft. Crafted via traditional lost-wax bronze casting with mellow aged texture, the work maintains tantric textual accuracy, with complete provenance research value for Himalayan sculpture collection, qualifying as premium artwork integrating devotional ritual function and academic art research merit.
