The Celadon glaze of Ru ware traces back to Emperor Chai Rong of the Later Zhou Dynasty. He decreed the timeless aesthetic: “Capture the hue of the sky when rain clears and clouds part.” This imperial vision of celestial celadon (tian qing se/天青色) was inherited by Northern‑Song Ru ware, forming the soul of the finest Song porcelain.

Chai Rong, Emperor Shizong of the Later Zhou Dynasty in the Five Dynasties period, is hailed as the wisest ruler of his era. In his youth, he traded tea and porcelain, gaining profound insight into ceramic craftsmanship.
Upon his ascension to the throne in 954 AD, facing a shortage of copper due to prolonged warfare, he ordered porcelain to replace bronze wares and established an exclusive imperial kiln, later known as the Chai Kiln—the only imperial kiln in China named after an emperor’s surname.
When craftsmen consulted him on the glaze color for imperial porcelain, Chai Rong gazed at the sky after rain had cleared and clouds parted, writing the timeless imperial edict:

When rain fades and clouds break, paint this hue for ages to come.

He meant that the pure celestial celadon glimpsed between dispersing clouds after rainfall should define imperial porcelain. The Chai Kiln thus set the standard for Celadon glaze, later praised as:

Celadon as sky, bright as a mirror, thin as paper, resonant as a chime.

After the founding of the Northern Song Dynasty, the imperial court inherited Chai Rong’s supreme fondness for celadon glaze. Devoted to Taoism and refined elegance, Emperor Huizong ordered an official kiln in Ruzhou—the Ru ware kiln—to recreate the celadon glaze pursued by Chai Rong. Hence Ru ware rose to rank first among the Five Great Song‑Dynasty Wares, carrying forward the timeless aesthetic of Celadon glaze from the Chai Kiln.
