The integration of Mahakala belief is an important chapter in the sinicization of Buddhism:
Tang Dynasty (Tang Esoteric Buddhism): Introduced to Han China by Amoghavajra and Vajrabodhi, known as “Mahākāla,” he became an important deity in Tang Esoteric Buddhism. Statues often depicted him as a “god of fortune,” venerated as a protector of temples and the state.
Song and Yuan Dynasties: Han Chinese folk culture worshipped Mahakala as a god of wealth, enshrined in kitchens and granaries. Tibetan Buddhism began to spread to Han China, and wrathful statues gradually appeared in Han temples.
Yuan Dynasty: The Mongol imperial court patronized Tibetan Buddhism, and the Sakya school entered the court. The six-armed wrathful Mahakala became an important deity venerated by the royal family, and statuary craftsmanship began to blend Tibetan and Han styles.
Ming Dynasty: The Kagyu school spread widely in Han China, leading to a proliferation of bronze statues of Six-Armed Mahakala, combining the ruggedness of Tibetan art with the delicacy of Han craftsmanship.
Qing Dynasty: The imperial court regarded Mahakala as a protector of the state. Statues in the Forbidden City and Chengde’s Outer Eight Temples blended Tibetan, Han, Mongolian, and Nepalese styles, reaching the pinnacle of craftsmanship. Meanwhile, the Tang Esoteric tradition continued in Japan as ‘Shingon Esotericism’, and Mahakala belief also spread widely in Japanese folk culture.
