Sun Simiao (c.541/581–682) was an unparalleled medical scholar and inner alchemy Taoist practitioner living across the Sui and Tang dynasties, born in Huayuan of Jingzhao (present-day Yaozhou District, Tongchuan, Shaanxi Province).

Frail and sickly in childhood, he resolved to study medicine to heal himself and save others. He could recite thousands of characters at age seven, and was hailed as a “divine child” by Dugu Xin, a senior minister of Northern Zhou.

In his youth, he mastered Taoist classics of Laozi and Zhuangzi, various philosophical works as well as Buddhist doctrines. He repeatedly declined official appointments from Sui and Tang imperial courts, choosing seclusion in Mount Taibai and Zhongnan Mountain to gather herbs, treat patients, cultivate Taoism and compose medical texts.

Throughout his lifetime, he authored two monumental medical classics: Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold Pieces and Supplement to the Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold Pieces. He formulated the rigorous medical ethics code Sincerity of the Great Physician, laying foundational frameworks for clinical traditional Chinese medicine, medicinal diet regimen, gynecology and pediatrics.

He lived to over a hundred years old, revered by posterity as the King of Medicine. He stands both as the paragon of traditional Chinese physicians and an esteemed immortal deity in Taoism.

Wars and plagues ravaged China between late Sui and early Tang dynasties, leaving common people underserved by physicians and medicines, with fragmented and disorganized ancient prescriptions.

A trend of Taoist self-cultivation prevailed among aristocrats, while imperial families revered Huang-Lao thought, alongside widespread integration of Buddhism and Taoism. Sun Simiao integrated medicine, Taoism, Buddhism and health cultivation, aligning with the ideological trend of his era, eventually receiving official imperial titles and deified worship among common folk.
