During the Chongning reign of the Northern Song Dynasty, Emperor Huizong revered Huang‑Lao thought, making Taoism flourish across the whole realm. Zhang Jixian, the 30th Celestial Master, titled True Lord Xujing, inherited the Taoist lineage from an early age and attained profound mastery of Zhengyi Thunder Rites. At thirteen, he followed imperial orders to subdue a demonic flood dragon and calm catastrophic floods in Xiezhou, Shanxi, earning nationwide renown. He presided over Longhu Mountain, the ancestral cradle of Zhengyi Tao. His private retreat for daily meditation and spiritual self‑scrutiny was named the Hall of Triple Self‑Reflection, deriving its title from The Analects, which advocates repeated daily self‑examination as a core practice of self‑cultivation.
In the spring of the third year of Chongning, Celestial Master Xujing cultivated inwardly in quiet meditation within the Hall of Triple Self‑Reflection. Thunder clouds suddenly roiled across the clear sky, with rumbling thunder lingering above the Heavenly Master Mansion, heralding an ordained heavenly ascension tribulation. Calculating the karmic context with his fingers, the master learned that a nine‑tailed fox immortal, having cultivated for two thousand years, faced the final Heavenly Thunder Tribulation to attain immortal status. Yet she carried unborn cubs in her womb; should lightning strike her directly, both mother and offspring would perish, and two millennia of spiritual cultivation would be utterly wasted.
Overwhelmed by desperation, the fox hurried into the hall, knelt, kowtowed and wept, begging the master’s compassionate deliverance from her ordeal. Perceiving her sincere, virtuous nature and a lifetime of seclusion without harming any living being, the master took pity and laid down three binding covenants for her: first, uphold virtuous conduct for all her days and never slay living creatures; second, dwell secluded in remote mountains, never beguile or disturb mortal common folk; third, guard the ancestral shrine of Longhu Mountain generation after generation, protecting the enduring incense heritage of the Celestial Master lineage. The fox immediately pricked her fingertip to swear a blood oath, vowing to abide by these terms for all eternity without the slightest violation.
Celestial Master Xujing then lit incense, composed a formal memorial to the Supreme Deity of Heaven detailing the full story, and mediated to resolve the heavenly tribulation. In an instant, thunder clouds dispersed and the sky cleared, the tribulation fully lifted. The fox safely gave birth to her young and faithfully upheld her oath through centuries of dedicated cultivation. When the 44th Celestial Master Zhang Yuqing inherited the lineage, acknowledging the fox’s immense merit in safeguarding the Taoist faith, he constructed the Fox Immortal Hall in the mansion’s western courtyard, enshrining a sacred statue of the fox immortal for perpetual worship. This millennial karmic bond between Celestial Master Xujing and the nine‑tailed fox has been passed down through generations, standing as an eternal fable embodying Zhengyi Tao’s core spirit of compassion and salvation for all sentient beings.
