Shakyamuni spent three months preaching filial teachings to his mother Maya in Trayastrimsa Heaven. King Udayana of Kaushambi fell ill from longing for the Buddha. Maudgalyayana guided artisans to witness Buddha’s thirty-two marks in heaven, who carved a life-sized sandalwood standing statue with abhaya and varada mudra, recognized universally as the world’s very first Buddha sculpture named Candana Sacred Image.

This contemporary polychrome gilded bronze standing Candana Buddha follows canonical iconography of the original sandalwood Buddha commissioned by King Udayana. It forms abhaya mudra on the right hand and varada mudra on the left, with characteristic concentric U-shaped robe folds, jeweled crown and ornaments, standing on double tier lotus plinth, a Sino-Tibetan stylized antique imitation religious artwork, not ancient Indian original sandalwood carving.
