Originating in the Sui and Tang dynasties and reaching its zenith during the Ming and Qing periods, the pocket hand censer (sleeve hand warmer) has endured for almost 1500 years due to its perfect synthesis of practical utility and artistic merit. Whether serving as a winter hand warmer for high-ranking officials or as an elegant desk ornament for literati, it is universally regarded as a refined object. Celebrated for its multifunctionality—appreciated, collected, and utilized—it captivated the scholar-official class for over a thousand years, standing as a quintessential embodiment of classical Chinese aesthetics.

View from above, the domed cover reveals a pair of auspicious beasts frolicking amidst clouds, which is in fact the traditional Chilong (hornless dragon) motif. Originating on Shang and Zhou bronze wares, this motif was first recorded in pre-Qin texts such as the Zuo Zhuan and the Chu Ci. In the Eastern Han Dynasty, Xu Shen’s Shuowen Jiezi defined it as “resembling a dragon, yellow in color, and without horns.” Unlike the exclusive five-clawed imperial dragons, The Chilong motif could be used by the general public, but strictly subject to certain conditions to avoid usurping imperial prerogatives. Consequently, exquisite objects adorned with this motif have been preserved to this day and can be admired in the prestigious collections of the Palace Museum in Beijing, the National Palace Museum in Taipei, and the Nanjing Museum.
