When Zhu Di, Prince of Yan, launched the Jingnan Campaign to seize the throne in Ming Dynasty, he faced deadly peril multiple times during battles. Amid storm and dark clouds, Emperor Zhenwu manifested himself with loose hair and divine sword to intimidate enemy troops and reverse the war situation. After ascending the throne as Emperor Chengzu, Zhu Di showed immense gratitude for divine protection, promoted Zhenwu worship nationwide, and poured massive funds over more than a decade to build grand imperial Taoist palaces on Wudang Mountain. He formally titled Zhenwu the Supreme Lord of Dark Heaven, establishing Wudang as Zhenwu’s sacred ancestral shrine, pushing Zhenwu belief to its peak across China and Southeast Asian Chinese communities.
